Humanism; A New Faith?
Charles Darwin; Richard Dawkins (evolutionary scientist ); Bill Nye (the science guy); Carl Sagan (PBS Scientist); Gloria Steinem(women’s lib/former Bunny); Jack Kevorkian(giving terminal drugs); John Dewey (educator)…..this is only a partial list of famous Humanists and there are thousands more.
The Humanists want to determine life as they see it and do not want to be responsible to any gods or God. They don’t believe in the afterlife so why bother with God here and now? Many do look after others and are humanitarians. Somehow that bit of morality seeped through. The goodness that they do…..regardless of how they view it…….comes from a Divine Mind whether they acknowledge it or not. Values and morality do not come with the umbilical cord! Have you ever seen a 2 year old willing to share?
The Bible is vilified and attacked with particular hostility and anger. One author charged that the Bible has been and remains an extremely dangerous book. “It is directly responsible for most of the wars, persecutions, and outrages which humankind has perpetrated upon itself over the past two thousand years.” Biblical faith is “devastating tyranny over the human race.”
This same author (John Dunphy) actually stated that his humanistic world view is an “alternate faith”. He titled his essay…”A New Religion for the New Age.” He also claims there will be great clash coming between this “new faith of humanism” and Christianity and in the end his “religion” will triumph over Christianity.
If this man had read the Bible with an eye to truth, he would have noted that the Bible sets high standards for humans. The Bible isnt to blame for the “wars, persecutions, and outrages”. It’s always been man who commits these atrocities. Yes, we do find carnage in the pages of the Bible…but that was brought about by man’s destructive behavior. Man has tried to play God in choosing right and wrong.
It appears that atheism and the secularist approach to life are having a corrosive effect on society, especially among young people. Only 30% of young adults said religion or a belief in God was very important to them. Will we become a nation of “religious nones” meaning have no faith at all?
What can a fractured nation expect? Virtually the entirety of its education system at all levels, the vast and influential entertainment industries, and even corporate American all present life as being detached from any Christian concept of reality. For these towering institutions, God is not even in the equation.
Yes, Christians can make a difference… even to the point of being thrown in the arena and be eaten by Lions!
This presents a sobering challenge for Christians. If we do not want our cultural life stripped bare of all biblical values, we need to take seriously the Great Commission. It’s time to be vocal in the world arena before the freedom to do so is lost! It’s time our churches got involved.
